Expect the unexpected, if an emergency struck would YOU be prepared?
Weather it's a power outage, severe weather or a wildfire, Albertans need to be prepared to take care of their basic needs for at least 72 hours.
A well-stocked 72 hour kit should include the following:
- two litres of water per person per day
- enough canned and dried food for three days (including protein/granola bars,
trail mix/dried fruit, crackers/cereals, canned tuna, beans and canned juice) - a manual can-opener
- pen and paper
- pocket knife
- axe
- rope
- shovel
- change of clothing and blankets
- duffel bag or plastic tote (to put 72 hour kit items in)
- small bills and change
- important legal documents like birth certificates, wills and passports
(place items in water-proof container) - first aid kit and supplies
- toiletries
- hygiene products (such as mini hand sanitizer) and soap
- flashlights
- candles
- lighter and water-proof matches
- radio
- batteries
- prescription medications as well as over the counter medications.
Update your kit every six months (put a note in your calendar/planner) to make sure that all food, water, and medications are fresh (not expired) clothing fits, personal documents are up to date, and batteries are charged. Small toys and games are important too as they provide comfort and entertain.
"Planning ahead can significantly reduce the impact of an emergency or disaster and help Albertans recover quickly," said Ray Danyluk, Minister of Municipal Affairs. Minister Danyluk also announced the ministry's plan to strengthen the Emergency Public Warning System (EPWS) with new technology.
